This book is intended as an introduction to the American economy, for visitors from abroad. It is limited of necemity to the most essential facts. Interpretation is avoided, the intention being to inform, not influence. Topics were suggested in great measure by participants in technical and cultural exchange programs in the past few years, and an attempt is made to present the material in a manner intelligible to foreign visitors.
This sixth edition contains almost all that was in the first five releases, as well as new and more up-to-date information. The material was compiled by Marion Hayes of the Division of Foreign Labor Conditions, Bureau of Labor Statistics, US Department of Labor in cooperation with Edward L. Deuss, Chief of the Evaluation Branch, Training and Technical Aids Division, Office of Industrial Resources, International Cooperation Administration.
