The Institute is administered by the Graduate School of Public Administration and Social Service as a co-operative effort of this school and three other schools of the University, the Graduate School of Arts and Science, the School of Law, and the Division of General Education and Exten sion Services. The Institute was established in 1948 to provide a forum for the dispassionate interchange of knowledge and opinion and to promote research in its field. It conducts a Conference on Labor each year and holds special conferences on specific problems from time to time. It carries on a regular research program with a special staff and publishes the work of scholars in the field.
