Emergency : its need and gains

Emergency Its Need And Gains is, obviously, of immediate relevance to the present situation in India, and many will regard it as a book of topical interest. Of course, it gives considerable attention to the reasons why the June-1975 Emergency was proclaimed and takes note of the gains that have accrued to the nation since then. However, the scope of the study goes very much beyond that. My intention has been to make it a survey of the history of the Republic of India. As such, it has been planned as follows:

The book is divided into eight sections. The First Section, 'From. Subjection to Sovereignty, provides the background material for understanding our main theme. It relates the story of the battle for freedom which ended on the momentous midnight of 14-15th August, 1947, when India became an independent country, and carries it forward to 26th January, 1950, on which, twice-historic, date, the Constitution came into force and India became a Sovereign Democratic Republic.

The Second Section, 'A Secular, Democratic Republic, deals with the Constitution. Some important portions of the Constitution have been interwoven into the text. Someone might ask why these could not be given as appendixes. The answer is that appendixes are generally treated as appendixes; and seldom, if ever, looked at. Since ignorance is what lies at the root of much that is confusing, and worse, the more important and relevant parts, articles, clauses, and amendments have been reproduced for ready reference, and for better acquaintance with what shoud be regarded as the Nation's Bible.
