Here is one more volume on the national elections of March 1977 which, for the first time, put the Opposition in power in India.
This volume does not offer you any "inside" story or "instant" history. It is an attempt to present a selection of news, views and comments on the election scene from January till March 1977. It is a blow-by-blow account, capturing points and counter-points in the great election debate between the Janata Party and the ruling Congress of Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
All documents appearing in this book are from the Indian Express, Bombay city edition. The Indian Express and the Statesman were the only two national English dailies which did not toe the line of Indira Gandhi's government during the 19 months of Emergency. For reasons of time and other practical considerations, the Statesman had to be unwillingly left out of this volume.
What does this book aim to give the reader? First, it tells the story of the Emergency as brought out in the speeches and press conferences of national leaders. Commentaries in the form of editorials and articles provide the necessary back ground and link. Secondly, this book also aims to show the ways in which the electorate was mobilized. More properly the focus is not only on facts but also on the ways in which facts were presented blown-up or distorted hectic election campaign. during the hectic election campaign.
