Ironically, the decline in the credibility of human rights the world over has come about at a time when human rights consciousness is fast spreading across diverse societies, most of whom are experiencing growing scales of state sponsored violation of basic rights. The dialectic of human rights seem to be edging away from the basic human concerns and getting entrapped into a web of opportunism being created at the global as well as the national levels.
Perspectives On Human Rights is essentially reflections on this growing paradox. A wide variety of perceptions relating to different aspects of the human rights violations of indigenous peoples, dalits and women, patterns in practices of power, custodial violence and police and the Criminal Justice System bring academics, lawyers, activists and administrators together in this collective venture to reflect upon the complexity of the problem that poses fundamental challenges to the modern democratic state systems in a plural and developing society like India.
