This book is about a very important right that has been conferred on us Important because until now everything in the administration was shrouded in mystery. As a result we- the common people in whom the sovereignty vests, at least on paper- until now could not know why a particular decision was not taken in our favour or decision was not taken at all, now have a weapon by which we can know this and thus proceed on to redress our grievance Transparency, which is one of the hallmarks of good governance, is sought to be brought about by the new Right to Information.
The book opens with an introduction about the importance of information particularly in the present century, the concept of open government and the importance of having the right to information. It then proceeds on to discuss this right in the context of international bodies and covenants as also the initiatives taken by other countries and India. The discussion on India includes reference to the earlier Freedom of Information Act, Lie various State Right to Information Acts and other laws. The book also finds reference to the Official Secrets Act
The above is followed by detailed provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2005 which include how to use it. what is expected from Public Authorities, the appointment of Public Information Officers and the constitution of the Information Commissions. The book does not end here. It also tries to guide its readers as how to file an application and what should it contain. It also gives references to some of the people who have used it so far and what was the result.
