Summary: National Foundation for Communal Harmony, an autonomous organisation with the Ministry of Home Affairs Government of India, was set up in 1992, in the backdrop of increasing communal, ethnic, caste, terrorist and other sectarian conflicts in various parts of the country. The main objective of the Foundation is to promote and undertake activities for the promotion of communal harmony, national integration and to highlight and strengthen the bonds of unity, affinity and brotherhood. It strives to create an atmosphere of inter-communal dialogue, tolerance and encourages non-violent means of resolving societal conflicts. The Foundation is implementing programmes and projects for the physical and psychological rehabilitation of children affected by communal, caste, ethnic, terrorist and other forms of violence/clashes that tend to fracture social harmony, which include their care, education and training. The Foundation has instituted awards, fellowships and carries out research and promotional activities to study, highlight and strengthen the cause of communal harmony, peace, tolerance, non-violence, etc. It has a well-established library with a large collection of books, journals, reports, newspaper clippings and other literature. The Foundation is also networking with organisations and individuals working in the field.
