The impact of various determinants of fertility and mortality can be analysed in the light of information on socio-economic variables and other risk factors. This data is not collected/tabulated in the regular SRS. To make data available on socio-economic determinants of fertility, mortality and life style factors, a Special Survey on Fertility and Mortality (SFMS) was conducted within the administrative structure of the SRS lapping the unique ability of SRS to mount specific studies of national and global importance. Apart from collection of data on birth and death events, information on fertility history of each married women, total number of children born and surviving, gender of the previous births, personal habits i.e. alcohol, smoking and on visual and physical impairment was also collected in SFMS.
This Report, which has been based on SFMS, provides unique data from over 10 lakh homes on specific fertility patterns, risk factors such as smoking and alcohol use, and childhood mortality. Special tables on fertility and mortality cross-classified by religion, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and educational level have been generated. For the first time, the conditional sex ratio at second and third parity has been estimated depending upon the sex of the previous child(ren). The data on smoking and drinking prevalence rates by sex and age group at all India and state level has also been presented.
