Summary: This book is an attempt to present facts and principles on wages in so far as they are known today. The book contains nine chapters and six annexures. The introductory chapter is an overview of wages. Chapter 2 analyses the wage concepts and summarises briefly the important theories on wages. Chapter 3 gives an account of wage payments and prevailing methods in different countries. Chapter 4 discusses different wage incentive schemes, wage-productivity link- age and their application. Chapter 5 explains different types of wage differentials. Chapter 6 throws light on the wage structure with particular emphasis on different aspects of dearness allowance. Chapter 7 focuses on the institutions of wage determination. Chapter 8 deals with the salient features of different wage enactments in India. The concluding chapter highlights the evolution of wage policy in India and various recommendations made in this respect by different committees. The annexures include details about consumer price index numbers, illustrations on dearness allowance schemes and other allowances, and an interview schedule. A comprehensive select bibliography has been added for further reference.
