Drought is the single most important weather related natural disaster often accentuated by improper management of available land, forest, water and other natural resources. Since drought affects large areas for long durations spread over several months its impact leads to food and water shortages and destruction of ecological systems causing misery to large sections of the population. Several districts in the semi arid and arid regions of India are chronically drought affected.
