"Socialist Union comes nearer than any of its predecessors to endowing the Labour Party with the philosophy of a Progressive Party.... This alone makes its pamphlet a political event" wrote. the Manchester Guardian in an editorial on the publication of Socialism: A New Statement of Principles. Mr. Attlee stated that "it expresses in far better language than I command the views which I hold and the faith which I believe."
Socialism and Foreign Policy is the first of an important series of reports in which Socialist Union applies these principles to contemporary politics. It offers a courageous and realistic examination of the facts
of the international situation. But its particular value is in
pointing to the special contribution which this country could
make towards easing international tension, if detailed policies
were guided by socialist principles.
Socialist Union shows that great opportunities for leadership are still open to Britain in Western Europe, the Commonwealth, Asia and Africa, and as an influential partner in the Atlantic Alliance.
