Summary: The American Philosophical Society aided the publication of the original articles, and the Wertheim Fund of Harvard University helped me to continue these studies by a grant of financial aid. To both of these organizations and their members, I offer my sincere thanks. A large number of union officers have been good enough to make advice, criticism, and materials available to me. I am deeply grateful to all of them for their generosity, kindness, and cooperation.
