Summary: Through suggestions and criticisms many people have helped in the research and writing that led to this book. It would be quite impossible to acknowledge or even to identify every one of these con tributions, but I wish to express my appreciation of the especially im portant share of two persons: Joseph Wilder, M.D., vice-president and cofounder of the American Association for the Advancement of Psy chotherapy, and George Katona, professor of economics and psychology at the University of Michigan and director of the economic program at the Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, at the same university. The directors and staff members of the Institute and the Center were most helpful during the year author spent in Ann Arbor working on this study with the help of a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
