Bundelkhand Region, embracing the northern most part of Madhya Pradesh and the southern most part of Uttar Pradesh, was predominatly renowned as a poastral region of the country. But due to the improper use, coupled with the problem of stray cattle the area has become barren where the animal husbandry is expected to play an important role in the economy of the region. Agricultural productivity of the area is also far below the National and State averages. Large chunk of the area has highly degraded, devoid of nutritious vegetation and lying as wastelands.
In our country green revolution has brought about ar self sufficiency in food grain output, but much needs to be done in the field of white revolution. Genetic improvement of livestock, and sufficient quality feed is essential. Presently the bluk of feed requirement is met with though poor quality roughage like wheat and paddy straws, dry stumps of jour and bajra but only little through quality forages.
Further, the most unscientific and improper use of these lands has led to the completel denudation and deforestation status. In order to minimise drastically the environmental pollution, soil erosion and eco-climatic degradation as well as to enable the dairy animals to play their legitimate role in the national development and to keep them out of competition with humanbeings for food grains, it is economical and desirable that the animals depend upon the natural grazing resources for their protein and energy requirements through development of Wastelands.
As a charter of IGFRI, the Institute is endowed with the responsibility of dual role of conducting research, training and extension programmes on forages and grasslands including development of approprete technologies for establishment, improvement and utilization of grasslands. We are therefore, pleased to work in this beautiful, but bountiful region of Bundelkhand of extremely fragile ecology, economy and related rural problems, which is region of heritage of sociocultural activity.
