Mid-Year Review of the Economy, published annually by the Economic Affairs Group of the India International Centre, has become a landmark event in the debate on economic policy.
This year the review has been authored by a team of economists from the prestigious Indira Gandhi Institute for Development Research, Bombay, led by Professor Kirit S. Parikh. The review highlights the areas of strength and weakness in the economy and emphasises the need to continue with fiscal stabilisation and economic liberalisation if India has to attain a significantly higher rate of growth than what has been recorded in the past.
In 1994-95, the review forecasts a rate of growth of national Income of around 5 per cent and an inflation rate of around 10 per cent. In separate chapters dealing with various aspects of the economy, the review focuses on the "unfinished agenda" for reform, especially in the financial sector and in the public sector.
Economists, researchers, policy makers and media commentators will find this independent, objective and professional review, as well as the wealth of data collected here, extremely illuminating and informative.
