Summary: The present study entitled "Economic Development in Sri Lanka during the 50 years of Independence: What Went Wrong?" by Dr. Saman Kelegama provides a very succinct exposition of the different aspects of the development experience with a critical analysis of the "rights" and the of the past 50 years in the Sri Lankan economy. Dr. Kelegama, a wellknown economist of Sri Lanka has examined the social, political and the economic dimensions of the experience and has rightly pointed out that Sri Lanka has to maintain a very high investment rate if it has to achieve and sustain a high growth rate of 8 per cent in the coming years. He also brings out the challenges posed by the twin goals of achieving high social welfare along with high economic growth with stability.
