Interest in the state has grown very markedly in the last fifteen year, but this is the first book on the subject to go beyond programmatic and formalistic debate. The authors offer a historical account of the interactions of state power with other sources of social power in order to identify key moments at which the autonomy of the state has affected the pattern of history. A particular feature of this account is the fact that it draws upon-and draws together-debates and literature concerning the state generated by different disciplines; the result is a study which will prove invaluable in providing a broader understanding of the nature and
function of states for students not only of political theory but also of sociology, economics anti international relations.
