The 1996 General Elections, the biggest event ever witnessed by any country, to elect the 11th Lok Sabha were accomplished on 5th of June, 1996. The Election, with voters list of 590 million involved the establishment of 8,25,000 polling booths, deployment of 50 lakhs of polling personnel and 1.75 lakhs of police force.
The election results are by and large on the lines of forecasts made in pre poll surveys. 540 Members of 28 Political Parties have been elected in this new Lok Sabha, 172 being the new faces. Emergence of Regional Parties at the Centre and post-election combinations of political parties are at all in the interest of Nation, only time will tell. But it is the tran sition period in Indian politics.
