Summary: The book is a collection of thirteen articles standing about the coneptual and empirical issues relating to the various aspects of rural development. Alleviation of rural poverty, unemployment and inequality through the economic and social development is the central theme of the articles. Thirteen articles are grouped into three parts. Part one includes five chapters which deal with the meaning, measurement, causes and solution of the problems of rural development, poverty and inequality. Part two contains three chapters relating to the appraisal of strategies, policies & programmes of rural development followed in India; and sugest the imperative chanages in policies and programmes to make them more effective for the upliftment of the vlulnerable section of rural society. Part three has five chapter which include the empirical studies of various rural development programmes and shown their impacts on the development of rural areas and on the living of the rural poor. This book is an attempt to examine the implications of the present thinking, strategies and policy programmes of rural development. This will certainly provide the reader a valuable understanding of the problem of rural development.
