However, the conting poletion growth and increasing demand for exploitation of natural resources have led to its large scale degradation This warrants judicious planning and systematic implementation of watershed projects is an integrated manner The development of these resources on a long term and sustained beais requires suppert of experienced and skilled inenagers. The watershed appesach being relatively new and innovative in nature, it is essential that the functionaries, connected with its planning and implementations at various levels are properly trained and oriented to carry out the tasks effectively. This is applicable more so in the case of lower level functionaries (PTA and below who are involved in this task on a day-to-day basis. These persons have to be given the right kind of orientation and training in planning and implementation of watershed development projects.
The Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India has initiated watershed projects with the active involvement of the community based organisations and support of non-governmental oganisations in planning and management of watershed projects. It was realised that there was an urgent need to make available information and methodology for systematic planning and implementation of watershed projects in the form of a manual written in simple and easy language for the use of one and all. The Ministry of Rural Development took initiative to bring out such a manual with the assistance of DFID and NIRD was entrusted to prepare the manual, covering various aspects of planning and management of watershed projects.
