The Workshop on Building and Strengthening People's Institutions in Natural Resources Management was held at IRMA during November 2-4, 1998 for thirty-six participants from non governmental organisations, international donor agencies and state government. This report highlights salient content and discussions of this Workshop. The Workshop focused on broadening the conceptual about People's Institutions (PIs) in Natural Resources Management (NRM) with the help of design principles and collective action theory. It attempted to develop theoretical understanding about collective action in NRM through detailed analysis of different institutional models and a field visit. Participants were also exposed to linkages between PIs and Panchayati Raj Institutions, relevant government policies and the role of non-governmental organisations in promoting PIs. Overall, the participants found the Workshop useful and suggested such workshops of longer duration in the future.
