Summary: The Sardar Sarovar project on Narmada River is a multipurpose project of national importance. It is an important part of the chain of projects Planned in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh to harness about 28 MAFT of Narmada waters for the benefit of people in the four states viz. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The Project can truely be regarded as of national importance on account of great contributions it will make to improving the quality of life of rural masses, meeting the basic needs like healthy drinking water and also its contribution to agricultural production and conserving petroleum resources by generating environmently friendly hydro power.
