Summary: The Research and Information System for the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (RIS) is an autonomous research institution set up in New Delhi with the financial support of the Government of India. RIS is a forum for providing analytical support to the developing countries on various international economic issues of concern to the process of their development. Its aims and objectives include inter alia, promotion of the concept of self-reliance among the non-aligned and other developing countries and forging and maintaining a system of effective links amongst the various research institutions of these countries with a view to utilizing their research capabilities for the maximum common benefits. It also seeks to serve as a data bank/information storage and retrieval centre on global and regional issues bearing on the interest of non-aligned and other developing countries. About the Author Joseph L.H. Tan is Senior Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore and the Institute's Coordinator, ASEAN Economic Research Unit. He completed his undergraduate studies at Brandeis University (Massachusetts) and obtained his doctorate from Harvard Univerander the sponsorship of the Harvard-Yenching Fellowship Program
