This book introduces some important mathematical techniques that are being used with increasing frequency on a wide variety of problems, especially in business and economics, but also in other social sciences as well. It contains material that has been used over a number of years at the University of Pennsylvania (1) for mathematical analysis and quantitative methods courses in the Master of Business Administration curriculum of the Wharton School and (2) for courses in the Graduate School of Arts and
Sciences, attended primarily by students from regional science, economics and city planning. In both types of curricula in recent years there has been a marked increase in the amount and also the level of quantitative analysis considered desirable-a trend that shows little sign of reversing. Although the present book has been written primarily with this audience in mind, the selection of material, and the level at which it is presented, should also be useful in some cases to an undergraduate program.
