Summary: This essay is not a treatise on classical theories of consumer behaviour. Instead it is an inquiry in to the possible existence of an empericallly testable theory of consumer demand. The inquiry begins with an examination of currently received theory and ends with the outline of a proposed theory of consumer decision-making behavior. My object, then, is to discover whether it is possible whether it is possible to construct a micro-economic theory of consumer demand that can be submitted to a series of empircal tests.
