The objective of the present book is to identify priority areas and the ways and means that might take corrective action leading to sustainability in development. This could be possible in relation to our particular social, cultural and economic milieu. Basic Indian philosophy have always been advocating harmonious relationship with nature which we have neglected during the last fifteen decades. Development, be it in population, land use, vegetation, conservation of biological diversity, renewable energy system, natural security or any other form devotes no greater share of itself to a single aspect than it does to the subject matter of the present book-Technology for Sustainable Development. Jacobs et al (1987) while contributing substantially to sustainable and equitable development laid down four basic principles while defining sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".
