This volume of collected essays reviews industrial policy and selected aspects of performance of Indian industry between 1950 and 1990. Special emphasis is given to productivity and the competitiveness of Indian firms. Besides an introductory essay by the editor, it includes eight chapters surveying different topics. Kaushik Basu describes the relevance of
recent developments in industrial organization theory to developing countries. Pulapre Balakrishnan presents econometric evidence concerning the determinants of short-run movements in prices and output in the industrial sector as a whole. The theory of economic regulation of industrial firms is reviewed by U. Sankar, followed by a discussion of the system of price controls for Indian industries, and suggestions for future improvements. Sanjay Kathuria describes the evidence regarding levels of competi tiveness of Indian firms, and possible explanations of these. SugataMarjit and Nirvikar Singh outline recent developments in the theory of technological change, and survey the evidence concerning development and transfer of technology in Indian industries. T.C.A. Anant and Omkar Goswami document the dimensions of industrial sickness in India, and describe the institutional barriers to restructuring or winding up sick enterprises.
