Summary: The book is a collection of 41 case studies of successsful rural entrepreneurs in India. The successful entrepreneurs are engaged in a range of activities including manufacturing and service enterprises. The entrepreneurs belong to seven different states, namely U.P., M.P., Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Each case study is a documentation of the struggles and traumas that these entrepreneurs went through while establishing their own small businesses in villages across India. While their enterprises are small and could also be described as self-employment ventures, each of them offers a rich and enthralling learning for the reader. The entrepreneurs covered in this book are engaged in diverse activities. Rose cultivation, motor-re winding workshop, rubber nursery, soap manu facturing, rental shop for utensils, saw mill and even a tea-sweet shop are some illustrations. What is remarkable is the fact that irrespective of the location and the business activity, all of them have exhibited entrepreneurial competencies in identifying a business opportunity, raising re sources, mobilising manpower and overcoming the start-up crises associated with any entrant in a business. It is also noteworthy that for most of them, these businesses were the first attempts in their family to move away from agriculture or caste-based occupations. Each case study vividly portrays the actor and his actions.
