In 1990, the National Front government headed by V.P. Singh virtually opened a Pandora's box by extending reservation in government jobs to other backward castes'. In justification of its policy, it harked back to a forgotten, decade-old report on the sub ject produced by B.P. Mandal. The furies let loose by this political move led to the downfall of the V.P. Singh government.
The reverberations caused by the policy of caste-based recruitment are still being felt. They seem likely to remain part of India's body politic for all time to come.
The present volume offers enlightened on the politics of reservation against the historical background. To lend objec tivity to the exercise, it brings together all the relevant documentation on the subject, such as the reports of all the commissions constituted at the national level to inves tigate the matter, government notifications, and the judgements of the Supreme Court.
