Summary: Demography is a well established and continuously growing discipline in India. A large number of foreign and Indian demographers have contributed to the growth of Indian demography. Yet, the mechanisms of demographic change have not been adequately understood. By and large, demographers have concentrated on the statistical side of the demographic problems. There are virtually no studies on the sociological examination of population processes. Dr. Sharma's present book fills this major lacuna. The author critically examines and reformulates the concept of social demography. He evaluates the philo sophy and paradigms of social demography. Dr. Sharma goes beyond the decimal points and deals with major issues in social demography such as population and poverty, urbanization and migration, and also issues in population management. No one in the area of demography whether from the sociological, economic, statistical, psychological or professional end-can afford to ignore this book.
