Summary: The collapse of the socialist system and the emergence of the western capitalist world as the undisputed hegemonic block during the late 'eighties brought about momentous changes in the balance of world power. The study attempts to bring out the implications of these changes for the growth prospects of developing countries like India. Consequent on the signing of the Dunkel Draft, the economies of the third world are being opened to the TNCs while there is no guarantee for the markets of developed countries to be freely available to them. The work indicates that the 'nineties presents a formidable challenge to policy makers in the third world if they are to maintain their autonomy and sovereignty in domestic policy-making.
