Summary: The work undertakes the study or the most contemporary problems of today; that of wastelands in India with special reference to U.P. The present problem of wasteland is usually one of land which has previously been used but which has been abandoned and for which no further use has been found. We should accept the principle that there should be an optimal use for every hectare of land and where possible multiple use. It follows therefore that there should be no wasteland. It is the ultimate solution to world problem of increasing pressure of population on physical resources particularly those of land. The work plumbs the depth of the problem by shedding light not only on the nature of the problem as that of nature of ownership, economic aspects etc, but also bringing to the fore, the fundamental problems of saline-alkali lands, kans infested wastelands and waterloffed lands. The work commends itself through its precise and penetrating study.
