An effective publishing and distribution system of books contributes in no small measure to diverse activities of the society e.g. administration, trade, industry, transport, agriculture and public distribution etc. In order to keep pace with the ever increasing demand arising out of all-round development over the years, the Deptt. of Publications makes available for display and sale to public Govt. publications on various subjects being brought out by the Government of India and their departments. Now the scope of Govt. publications has expanded very much and it covers, inter alia, Government's Planning, Programmes, Formulating Policies, Social and Economic Uplifts, Import and Export Policies, Law Reports, Economic Survey, Gazette Notifications etc. Its main purpose is to bring the Government's policies, programmes and decisions to the notice of the various Ministries/Departments, as well as the public of all spheres. In the modern times the public is much interested to know such activities and policies of Government. The only media which can reach to common man is the book/official publication.
