According to an official estimate, the drought of 1987 swept across 267 districts of the country and affected more than 166 million people. It served to remind policy planners that greater attention needs to be devoted to measures to cope with climate variations that lead to drought. This was the sixth seriopus drought that the country faced after 1965 and each successive one appears to have grown in intensity and in area of impact.
