Asian seminar on rural development: the Indian experience

Summary: The Indian Society of Agricultural Economics and the Centre for Management in Agriculture at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), organised a four-day seminar in December 1984 in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre "to evaluate the rural development experience generally in Asian countries and in India in particular". About 40 eminent social scientists, planners and development administrators from seven Asian countries, including India, participated in the seminar and discussed in depth the issues and themes which were identified earlier. This volume presents the papers and proceedings of the seminar. This volume reconstructs the seminar by put ting together the papers presented and the discussions which took place. The volume consists of five parts, one for each of the themes of the seminar. Part I presents two papers on the theme, "Evaluation of Rural Development Strategies". Part II includes two papers: Consistency bet ween Macro and Micro Planning and Rationale and Limitation of Decentralised Planning.. Part III examines issues pertaining to the problems of implementation of rural development programmes. The two papers included in Part IV, examine. the dilemma of reconciling the imperatives of economic growth with the values of social justice. Part V provides a brief overview of the experiences of other Asian countries in the field of rural development. The proceedings which precede each of parts I through IV contain summary previews of the papers presented and reports of the discussions which followed the presentations.
