One of the most challenging and herculean aspects of India's development efforts have been to evolve a strategy to ameliorate the social and economic conditions of more than 50% of its population living below poverty line. During the past forty years, various programmes by the government of India and state government have been initiated. There is no doubt that the poor have benefited due to these programmes but not to desired extent.
In this book, Dr. Ashok Kumar, a distinguished researcher since last one decade, associated with research project on 'weaker sections of the society', provides an informed glimpse in the nature of shifts in emphasis and approach for rural development undertaken in pre and post Independent India giving a special appraisal of the various facets of the Jawahar Rozgar Yojana. The author has carried out micro level study of Saran District in Bihar objectively and presented empirical realities regarding our rural development efforts and based on findings of the study made positive and viable recommendations for appropriate channellization of development efforts.
