Summary: The present volume contains data and documents, pertaining to the later half of 1990, of all the national political parties recognised by the Election Commission of India. The parties include the Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India, The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Indian National Congress, The Indian Congress (Socialist) and the Janata Oat. In Oecember 1990 the Janata Dal was divided into two when a sizable section led by Shri Chandra Shekhar left it and formed a separate party named as Samajwadi Janata Dal with Chaudhary Devilal at its head. It was further divided at the Centre when a group of 20 MPs led by Shri Ajit Singh left the Janata Dal and formed a separate group in Parliament. Janata Dal was also divided into two in U'P. Assembly -- one group known as Janata Dal (A) consisting of supporters of Shri Ajit Singh and the other known as Janata Dal (B) consisting of those loyal to Shri Bommai. Gana Parishad in Assam and Telegu Oesam in Andhra suffered splits. A section of Telegu Oesam in Parliament was merged with Congress (I). The Akali Dal was divided into numerous factions in Punjab.
