This book is a revised version of Ph D. thesis and distinct from the bulk of literature on the New International Eco nomic Order (NIEO). Instead of explaining that NIEO is an instrument of global economic welfare, this study emphasises that NIEO should be looked upon as a mechanism to trans form the unequal power struc ture created by the Bretton woods system in 1944. This system has made the develop ing nations more vulnerable to international political pressures, less autonomous in economic pursuits and perpetrated economic hege mony of the West. To rectify these contradictions, the NIEO envisages the restruc turing of the trade pattern, financial order and the UN System.
