This is the second commemorative volume of Indira Gandhi memorial series brought out. by Dr. A.V. Bhuleshkar and Prof. D.M. Mithani. It deals with sectoral as well as structural transformation witnessed in Indian economy since the planning era. The editors firmly believe that the sectoral transformation occured in the 1970s and the subsequent structural reforms introduced during the 1980s were due to bold policy measures taken by late Smt. Indira Gandhi during her regime. The spirit of reforms has now been given a greater thrust by the present Government. A very wide ranging programme of adjustment and structural reforms programme is being implemented in various sectors of the economy. This book also deals with certain aspects relating to the ongoing programmes. The contributors of articles to this volume have succinctly commented on various aspects of structural issues involved in the transitional period of our economy and have highlighted certain problems which have arisen and which may also emerge in the process of structural change and reforms in future which needs to be taken care of. In this Introduction to this book, Shri Ekanath Thakur, Director, National School of Banking, has aptly remarked that "The policy initiatives recently taken to liberalise the Indian eco nomy through various structural changes and adjustments, no doubt, are welcome features since they are likely to infuse the elements of competition and vibrancy in our economy".
In his significant contribution to this book in the "Foreword", Honourable Professor Javed Khan, Minister for Housing of the Maharashtra State Government, has opined that "This compendium of economics has focussed many problems and raised various issues pertaining to the Indian economy in the transitional period. I am sure this book will be useful to one and all in this country as well as abroad".
