Summary: The various endeavours towards tribal change are precisely nothing but massive efforts at modernising the tribals and enabling them to catch up with the mainstream of society.. Although the welfare of the Scheduled Tribes engaged the attention of national leaders even before Indepen dence, planned economic develop ment was adopted as our national policy only after achieving Indepen dence. It was from the beginning of Fifth Five Year Plan that planning for tribal areas has been given a new orientation.. After the initiation of the planned development in the country, many programmes were implemented for the socio-economic upliftment of the tri bals both by state and central governments. The effectiveness and impact of these programmes have not been thoroughly evaluated in the country. Visakhapatnam is one of the highest tribal concentrated zones where heavy investments and develop mental efforts were made by the Andhra Pradesh Government. This book is an attempt at a systematic study of the impact of various tribal development programmes initiated by the government at grass-root level in Visakhapatnam district. The book also examines the pro blems and constraints in the imple mentation of Tribal Development Programmes; the economic, cultural and social impact of the programmes. on the quality of life of the tribal households, and provides a discussion on suitable corrective and remedial measures for effective implementa tion of the Tribal Development Pro grammes for achieving the desired results. It is expected that this book will be great use for scholars, administrators and the students of Tribal Development.
