By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: New Delhi; Ajanata Pub.; 1984Description: 138 pSubject(s): DDC classification:

Summary: Philosophers of art in the twentieth century have started building their Aesthetic Theories from studios rather than from art galleries, Consequently the problem of medial diversity has become an important issue for contemporary discussions on aesthetics. It is held by many thinkers that aesthetic concepts acquire different connotations with different art media, The present volume is an outcome of the discussions organised by the Department of Philosophy, Panjab University, Chandigarh on 'Nature of Art-Object' and 'Communication in the Art'. The various contributors to this volume have attempted to analyse the different art media and highlight the complexities of artistic communication in the light of medial diversity. In this context is viewed the distinction between the linguistic and the non-linguistic arts. Discussions of aesthetics can be fruitful only if theoretical questions regarding the arts are seen from different perspectives from the points of view of practising artists in different art media, art critics and philosophers. This volume is an attempt in that direction and the papers range from purely conceptual discussions on nature of artistic communication to its manifestation in different art forms such as fiction, theatre, poetry and music.
