Computer applications for rural development

Computer today has become an expected tool and technology in everyday life. Beginning with defence, all sectors of human activities have already gained enormously by using computers be it in government departments, industrial enterprises, business houses or public utility systems. Even though a late starter, India has taken large strides to catch up with the computer revolution, particularly thanks to the initiatives of the present government.
This book tackles a new area : Computer applications in the rural sector. There has been little or no work done and there needs to be sustained effort in the areas like micro-level planning, rural food and agriculture, rural education, rural health, rural communication, rural industry, rural banking, and rural environment. All these areas are covered in the book using the experience and expertise of persons acknowledged in their own professional areas. The current status in the country as well as in some of the neighbourhood countries is also described. Both the central government and the state governments have shown quite some initiative, which too are delineated. All in all, this is a book meant for rural planners, administrators. and decision-makers and all those who are concerned with this vital sector of the country's economy: the rural advancement for the nation.
