Summary: The purpose of this book is to highlight the need for a shift of emphasis from industrialisa tion as such to a selective and employment oriented growth of industries in the develop ment countries like India. The study has the following distinguishing features: (i) It examines the gravity and magnitude of the problem of unemployment in India and particularly, in Punjab. (ii) It makes a critical review of the available literature on employment as well as the empirical studies on various aspects of the employment problem, especially in India. (iii) It discusses the main characteristics of agro-industrial units in respect of their growth pattern, nature of employment, employment structure, wage structure, factor intensity and distribution of workers by origin. (iv) It also discusses the conduct pattern of large and small units on the basis of fac for analysis and highlights the differen ces in the orientation of their behaviour pattern. (v) It analyses the relative significance of various determinants of employment. potential of large and small units through the application of regression analysis. (vi) The study identifies high and efficient employment generating agro-industries on the basis of Chenery-Taylor tech nique and probes the prospects for their development in Punjab as a guide to practical policy.
