In this unique collection of original essays, eminent scholars reflect on the changes taking place in the Indian economy and society and in the sphere of higher education. These changes are probed both at the micro and macro levels and are analysed against the successes and failures of the centralised planning process initiated by independent India's leaders.
The essays are divided into three sections. The first section is devoted to the economy and covers topics like the political economy of village India, economics and ecology, and the causes and consequences of slow growth in agriculture. The second section focuses on development and planning. Among the topics discussed are limitations of the concept of national income, paradigms of social transformation, and the interface between energy, environment and development. The essays comprising the final section deal with educational planning and development in India and argue the case for a radically different kind of educational planning taking into account the technological changes affecting information and communication systems and the changing patterns of the demand for education.
Consisting of thought-provoking contributions from leading academics and dealing with a wide range of issues related to the development of India's economy and society over the past 40 years, this volume will command the attention of policy makers, development planners, administrators, economists, sociologists, political scientists and educationists.
