Trade union movement in India

Based on intensive research and original sources, the present study is a first-rate work on the history of the trade union Movement in India. Secondary sources have also been utilised with profit and understanding.

The book consists of five chapters, a conclusion, appendices and a vast Bibliography of the source material used.

The first chapter deals with the backdrop, against which trade union activity took root in India. The second chapter endeavours to trace as to how the All India Trade Union Congress came to be formed in 1920. The third chapter studies the organiza tional infrastructure that came to be evolved in the subsequent years to cocciate, or to work out a func tione alationship at different levels The equation, between the All In Trade Union Congress and the Indian National Movement, in particular, the Indian National Congress and the emerging left forces is the communists. How the two, the trade union movement and the Nationa Movement influenced and lent support to each other is also discussed in this chapter. The fifth chapter dwells upon the ideological circumstances that contributed to dissensions within the AITUC and its split in 1929.
