Summary: Environment and resources have a very close relationship. Over exploitation, or mismanagement of resources is likely to lead to environmental problems. and catastrophe. Resources have been studied in terms of population. Misuse of land, soil, water minerals, etc. by the ever increasing population had been responsible for developing methods and techno logies for monitoring the resources. Remote sensing GIS technology and digital mapping have greatly contributed towards this goal at the regional level. Similar methodologies and technologies also help in assessment and monitoring of the environment. In fact, evalua tion and mapping of environment and resources have been complementary to each other. The present volume is aimed to look into the environmental issues which become signi ficant at the regional level What are their nature? What is the aerial extent? How people have adjusted to the environment? These are some of the aspects which will be dealt in this volume. Each chapter may be considered as an example of the environmental issue which become significant at the regional level. Obviously, region, lying in between the nation and the local levels has been considered for study as an aerial unit with certain pecularity. This volume will be of interest to geographers, cartographers, social and environ mental scientists. It will also prove to be an asset in the libraries for reference purposes.
