Roy disagreed with the extreme left sectarian policy of the Comintern at the Sixth Congress (1928) and published his criticism in the Communist Opposition press in Germany. After his break with the Comintern he wrote his monumental work, Revolution and Counterrevolution in China, returned secretly to India (1930), was arrested and sentenced to twelve years' rigorous imprisonment, which was reduced on appeal to six years.
Volumes I and II of Selected Works cover ed Roy's writings between 1917 and 1927.Volume III presents a selection of his principal writings between 1927 and 1932. Very large sections of this volume were previously inaccessible since they had not been written in English nor published or included in any book. Roy's contributions to Das Volksrecht, Gegen den Strom, Arbeiter Politik and INKOPP, and his polemical pamphlet Die International Verbundeten were found in archives in Europe, and they have been translated for the first time from German into English for the present volume. Other rare material includes the 'Assembly Letter', Roy's 'Draft Resolution on the Indian Question' prepared for the Sixth Congress, the document 'On the Indian Question in the Sixth Congress', 'My Crime', "The Lessons of the Lahore Congress', 'My Defence', and selections from The Masses, Inprecor, Revolutionary Age, and Independent India (1931).
