Summary: Development of Rural Poor, through special programmes, has now been accorded a very high priority in the development process of India. Integrated Rural Develop ment Programme is one of the major policy instruments for achieving this objective. The book comprehensively studies the functioning of the Programme. The incisive case study has been able to capture the finer details of the implementation and impact of the programme. In particular, the chapter on the impact of the programme on income of the beneficiaries analyses, threadbare, not only the income increases, but also the specific reasons for not being able to achieve the desired results. Alongwith the case study, the book also presents an exhaustive account of the func tioning of IRDP in other parts of the country. Significantly enough, the macro analyses strengthens the findings of the case study, as there are many similarities in the critical issues. The book offers constructive suggestions for developing the rural poor. It's epilouge section lifts the level of debate at a much higher plane by offering alternative strategies.
