Summary: Tribals in India respresent a distinct cultural stratum and a definite demographic position in India's national life. Since Independence, it has been the constant endeavour of the Government to improve the lot of tribals and bring them into the mainstream of national life. These efforts have brought about socio-economic change among the tribals but not to the desired expecta tions. This comprehensive study first describes the different patterns of life of tribals in different parts of India and then gives a brief sketch of seventeen major tribes. The diversity of the problems faced by the tribals have been dis cussed at great length and valuable insight are offered for properly handling them. It then describes the various tribal movements, the safeguards provided in the Constitution of India and programmes undertaken for tribal develop ment. Lastly, it reviews recent changes in tribal way of life based on 155 published articles and occasional papers from 23 core journals in the field of anthropology and other social sciences. The book has valuable reference material.
