Many retired diplomats have written about their experiences in the Indian Foreign Singh's Undiplomatic Memoirs' is unusual for its allegiance to truth, however, unpleasant. The memoirs are an unvarnished tale of honesty and deception, of meanness and magnanimity, and above all, of the glittering facade of diplomatic life. If his memoirs reveal some of the exalted ones of yesteryear in an unfavourable light, it is only because unsavoury situations did arise and Singh mentions them all with refreshing candour. The author has also, in the process, put forward a cogent critique of Indian foreign policy.
The memoirs offer a wealth of information and a different perspective on diplomatic life.
